Theipval. 2B or not to be. Along this row next the the grave of an unknown soldier someone had placed a photograph of their relative. It could have been.

Crosses
Behind the 47th Division London Memorial was a wooden cross fashion with scraps of wood, nails driven through at the midpoint held the two struts together. Above the cross was a crack that ran across the memorial like a crown of thorns or perhaps barbed wire that caught so many soldiers as they fought over mere metres of mud.

Like two opposing armies rooted in muddy fields these crops grow. A muddy track symbolically dividing them.

The Last Hornbeam. This was the only tree that survived the fighting around Delville Wood. A solitary tree, now outgrown by the mature forest. This leaf seemed to me to be riddled with bullet holes and the trunk behind resembling a cartoonish character with his arms aloft. .
